New Models in Higher Education
This week's reading give an overview of several new approaches to educating. The first article is long but is broken into sections that will make it easier to read. Note-taking tip: try grouping your thoughts into sections that align with our weekly discussions.
For this week's R&R: Consider the Six Models of Education (Mehaffy) and the changes the author describes as being underway. Which model(s) of change are most appealing to you and why? In other words, identify our current model and describe the ways in which specific changes (listed by Mehaffy) would be beneficial. Please choose one "current model" of education (this can be based on your own current or previous experience in education) and describe the extent to which changes (aim for three!) listed by Mehaffy would impact the model you've identified.
The model that was most appealing to me is the Cost Model. Stated by Mehaffy college is like a business,which i think is true in many aspects when you really look at the bigger picture. He says that schools and the government is more focused on the bottom line, of the whole process rather than the educational part which thats what it should really be about. When looking at my college experience so far when it came to choosing the right school, i soley looked at schools based on what they can offer me academic wise. Then i thought about the finanacial part,when it should have been a mix of both or the other way around. In comparision to the second article(outstanding education) their looking at the Cost model from an educational stand point Moocs are cutting the cost of education. MOOCS is eliminating the funding for big universities and helping the students as well as government. According to the article in 15 years half the universities will be gone because of their high cost(W.W.) facualty members are concerned that the internet is likely to reduce the number of professors and colleges(W.W) thus giving the govenment more of a reason to require schools to give credit for online courses. Its all a business.
