Week 6

Freshman Seminar: The Democracy of Education

We’ve read several articles this term and have had good discussions about education. For Quiz 1, you’ll need to choose one article and respond to the questions below. You can choose any article but be sure it will allow you to answer all questions. Your responses should be typed, double-spaced. Please print your quizzes and submit them at the beginning of class on Wednesday, July 10th.

Choose one article from our weekly readings and answer the following:

  1. Write a one-paragraph overview of the ideas expressed. Be sure to focus on the author’s main points. Think about it this way: what point(s) is the author trying to make? In other words, what does s/he consider important for you to know?

  1. Identify three issues in the article you’ve selected. What are the potential drawbacks of his/her line of reasoning? Think about who these ideas/policy suggestions would benefit and how and who might be left out of such benefits?

  1. Choose one issue or topic raised in your article. Write one paragraph that supports the idea and write one paragraph that opposes the idea.

Your informed opinion: What improvements would you like to see in education and what is necessary to make this change (these changes) happen?
